A wall-panel structure with a shaped floor and replaceable liner, available in multiple layouts and patterns.

A vinyl liner pool is built from wall panels set on a footing around the shape of the pool, a shaped floor, and a custom vinyl membrane fitted over the structure. Water holds the liner against the walls and floor, and coping caps the edge.

The construction method supports multiple panel layouts, depths, step options, and liner patterns. The liner is also a planned replacement item, so the useful comparison includes initial scope, ongoing water care, protection from damage, and future liner work rather than a single price claim.

How a vinyl liner pool is built

The structure starts with wall panels, steel or a rigid polymer, bolted together on a poured footing and braced to hold the shape. Panels come in straight and curved sections, so the pool is not limited to one boxy outline: rectangles, L-shapes, and gentle freeform curves are all on the table, along with custom depths, steps, and benches. Once the walls are set and plumbed, the crew trowels a smooth floor base to the exact profile of the pool.

Then the liner goes in. It is a custom vinyl membrane, made to the measurements of your specific pool, hung from a track just under the coping and drawn tight as the pool fills. The result is a continuous, watertight surface with no grout lines and nothing rough underfoot. Modern liners come in a wide range of patterns and thicknesses, so the look of the water is yours to pick.

The value case, and what upkeep looks like

Among the three pool types Tri-Star State Pools offers, vinyl liner is normally the lowest starting-cost option. The complete proposal still depends on access, excavation, grading, wall and floor design, steps, liner selection, equipment, utilities, decking, barriers, and restoration, so compare the full written scopes rather than the starting position alone.

Day to day, owners balance water, run and maintain equipment, keep the surface clean, and protect the liner from damage. The liner itself is renewed when condition and written product guidance call for it. That planned maintenance can also change the pattern. Soil, drainage, installation details, and seasonal care matter in Middle Tennessee's freeze-and-thaw conditions.

The case for a vinyl liner pool

The lowest starting-cost option

Vinyl liner is normally the lowest starting-cost option among the three systems we offer. The complete cost still depends on the property, layout, equipment, decking, and written scope.

Soft, smooth underfoot

The vinyl surface is continuous and smooth underfoot, with no grout lines. The exact texture, thickness, pattern, and care requirements depend on the liner selected.

Custom sizes and shapes

Straight and radius wall panels let the pool follow your yard: rectangles, L-shapes, freeform curves, custom depths, steps, and benches. It is not a one-size-fits-all box.

A look you pick, and can refresh

Liners come in a wide range of patterns and colors that set the tone of the water. When it is time to replace the liner down the road, you can change the look and the pool feels new again.

No concrete-shell cure stage

The panel-and-liner structure avoids the shell-curing stages used for gunite. The complete schedule still depends on site access, excavation, weather, inspections, utilities, decking, and restoration.

Scope in writing

The proposal should identify the wall and floor system, liner, equipment, plumbing, decking, included site work, exclusions, payment stages, change process, and handover responsibilities.

Smart value, still built right

Choosing a vinyl liner pool is a decision about structure, surface, design options, and future liner care. You get an in-ground pool shaped with wall panels and a fitted liner, with the exact scope defined by the site and proposal.

The tradeoffs are practical. A gunite pool is formed from steel-reinforced concrete on site and supports a broad design range. A fiberglass pool uses an available factory mold and arrives with its gel coat complete. A vinyl liner uses a custom-fit membrane that will eventually be evaluated for replacement. Take a look at all three and compare all three side by side before deciding.

Vinyl liner is normally the lowest starting-cost option of the three, but we do not publish hard prices because access, excavation, drainage, dimensions, steps, liner, equipment, utilities, decking, barriers, and restoration all move the scope. A site review and itemized proposal are more useful than a generic number.

How we build a vinyl liner pool

Design and layout

The planning stage reviews the yard, size, shape, depth, steps, access, utilities, drainage, and permitting path before the approved outline is marked.

Excavation

The crew digs the shape you approved and grades the base, shaping the deep end, shallow end, and any steps or benches into the excavation.

Wall panels

Steel or polymer wall panels are set on a poured footing around the perimeter, bolted together, and braced plumb and level to lock in the shape.

Plumbing and floor

We rough in the plumbing for returns, skimmer, and main drain, then trowel a smooth floor base to the exact profile the liner will sit against.

Liner and coping

The custom-measured vinyl liner is hung from the track under the coping and set into place, and the coping caps the edge of the pool.

Fill, decking, and startup

As the pool fills, the liner draws against the walls and floor. Decking, equipment startup, inspections, water care, and handover follow according to the written project scope.

Questions, answered straight

Is a vinyl liner pool cheaper because it is lower quality?

It is a full in-ground pool with a different structure and interior surface. Quality depends on the specified wall and floor system, liner, installation, water care, and surrounding site work. Compare complete written proposals rather than using construction type alone as a quality or price shortcut.

How often does the liner need to be replaced?

The liner is a planned maintenance item that gets refreshed periodically over the life of the pool, not something you replace often. When the time comes, it is also a chance to change the pattern and give the pool a fresh look. We will walk you through what to expect for your specific pool and water.

Can I get a custom shape and depth?

Yes, more than people expect. Straight and radius wall panels let us build rectangles, L-shapes, and gentle freeform curves, with custom depths, steps, and benches. The design follows your yard and how you swim rather than a fixed catalog.

How does a vinyl liner pool handle a Tennessee winter?

The wall and floor system, drainage, plumbing, equipment, liner condition, and water level all need a climate-appropriate plan. The handover should explain the seasonal steps for the selected products and who is responsible for them.

How is a vinyl liner different from gunite or fiberglass?

A vinyl liner pool uses wall panels, a shaped floor, and a replaceable interior membrane. A gunite pool uses a concrete shell formed on site, while a fiberglass pool uses a factory-molded shell with a gel coat. Compare layout options, site work, build stages, surface care, and future renewal needs.
